SULZER 8 RTA 62 U maintenance and general overhauls

For one of our clients, we overhauled 4 x RTA62 8-cylinder engines on 4 different ships one after the other. The project lasted 3 months and included the full scope of renovation. From the exhaust valves going down through the heads, pistons, crosshead bearings to the main bearings. It was a fascinating project.

The most interesting renovation when it comes to the RTA 62 U engine seems to be the overhaul and restoration of the engine to perfect condition after a very serious fault. The engine’s turbocharger blew apart and engine exhaust gases escaped into the engine room, where the entire engine control system burned down. The engine was working in manual mode, which resulted in a lack of air. The exhaust gas temperatures were so high that the pistons melted at the edges. Our team of mechanics restored the engine to a like-new condition. The engine serves our customers to this day.
